OUR STORY

1872

Rikinosuke Aoyama, the founder of company was born in a formerly high ranking samurai house of domain Yamagata in Tokyo. But the period of samurai was already over at that time with no other choice than that he was apprenticed to the dye merchant at the age of 12. Then he learned dyeing and worked hardest to improve his work of dyeing. Finally as a top disciple he was granted from the boss to become independent and started his own dyeing business at Nihonbashi, Tokyo.

(One Hundred Famous Views of Edo)
by Utagawa Hiroshige

Nihonbashi is located near Konya-Cho(Present Kanda area) where is the town of dye artisans dyeing at the riverside in the Edo period.

The dye merchant whom Rikinosuke was apprenticed to has originally come from Echigo(Present Niigata) . Rikinosuke must had been fiercely determined to open his dye shop in Tokyo. And his passion has been inherited in the brand name ”MIYACOZOME (Dye of Capital city) from age to age.

1896

Rikinosuke tried his best to expand his business but in actuality it was in the form of distributer of dye during this period.

Traditional crest of business name, KATSURAYA

Tametaro Aoyama, the second generation President of Katsuraya

1915

Tametaro Aoyama, his son took over the will of Rikinosuke when he passed away at the age of 44. Although Tametaro was still at the young age of 25, he has significantly advanced business by manufacturing its own dye as instead of purchasing them from outside.

That day it was not abundant in material things compared to today. Dye was strongly demanded for re-dyeing clothes especially Japanese kimono, business suits and military clothes. Tametaro expanded the scope of fabrics to dye from cotton and silk to wool.

Unique glass bottles of "MIYACOZOME" dye at that time

Tametaro started to sell dye in glass bottles easy to handle but very rare in its day. And MIYACOZOME became well known and popular for family-use dye throughout Japan.

Dyeing was deemed so important as one of the accomplishments of household and adoped in the classes of home economics at schools. Even so Tametaro put greater effort into promotion of it by hosting dyeing lessons by the company.

Since then up to now, Katsuraya has continued to develop dyes easy for families to use and launched "COLD DYE ALL" for all kinds of fibers and other ECO products free from harmful substances that satisfied strict conditions of EU(European Union).

The company logo of light house

The company logo of light house was set in the hope that MIYACOZOME dye would attract a lot of home dyers throughout the world as the light house in the ocean symbolized the overseas trading of the day. The model is the old Shinagawa light house built in the beginning of Meiji era (the oldest western style light house in existence).

The logo and trademark of MIYACOZOME

MIYACOZOME is our brand name of dye. Its Japanese characters inherit an old Japanese syllabary character not even used any more. MIYACOZOME is literally translated to the “Dye of capital city”. And it is said it was named after old Tokyo city where the brand was born.
