History of company

Utagawa Hiroshige

In 1890(Meiji 23), KATSURAYA FINEGOODS.CO.,LTD. was founded in Nihonbashi (the traditional center of culture and business of Tokyo) aiming to provide dyes easy for anybody to use.

Rikinosuke Aoyama, The founder of the company

In 1872(Meiji 5), Rikinosuke Aoyama, the founder of company was born in a formerly high ranking samurai house of domain Yamagata in Tokyo. But the period of samurai was already over at that time with no other choice than that he was apprenticed to the dye merchant at the age of 12. Then he learned dyeing and worked hardest to improve his work of dyeing. Finally as a top disciple he was granted from the boss to become independent and started his own dyeing business at Nihonbashi, Tokyo.

Since 1896(Meiji 29), Rikinosuke launched the family–use dyes;"Miyacozome" trying his best to provide more customers better dyes as much as possible with uncompromising quality at the lowest price.

Tametaro Aoyama, the second generation
President of Katsuraya

Tametaro Aoyama, his son took over the will of Rikinosuke when he passed away at the age of 44 in 1915. In 1922(Taisho 11) the registration of incorporation as "Katsuraya-Shoten (Store)" was completed.

Because that day people suffered from shortage of goods, the dyes for family-use provided by Katsuraya met demands of re-dyeing old clothes greatly.
